Garages accumulate because they take everything that has nowhere else to go, and nothing ever leaves. Clearing one is mostly a decision problem rather than a lifting one.
Empty it onto the driveway
Sorting in place does not work, because you cannot see what you have and there is nowhere to put the sorted piles.
Pick a dry day, take everything out, and sort on the driveway. In Middle Tennessee that means an early start in summer, before the afternoon heat.
The categories that need handling
Paint, solvents, fuel, pesticides and pool chemicals go to household hazardous waste rather than in the pile. Propane cylinders need exchange or a dedicated drop-off.
Old fuel in cans and equipment is the most commonly overlooked item and cannot go in a truck.
- Empty completely rather than sorting in place
- Chemicals and fuel to household hazardous waste
- Propane cylinders to exchange or drop-off
- Scrap metal is often collected free
- Book removal for the same day you sort
Scrap metal
Old appliances, metal shelving, bicycles and equipment are often collected free by scrap merchants, which removes a chunk of the volume before the paid removal arrives.
That reduces the truck fraction you are paying for, sometimes by a whole step.
Book removal for the same day
A garage emptied onto a driveway and left overnight either goes back in or gets rained on. Booking removal for the afternoon of the sorting day forces the decisions and finishes the job.
It is the single most effective thing you can do to stop a garage clear-out becoming a two-week project.
